CHDS History

1946

  • The office of the Director of the Guidance Testing Service occupied by Dr. Dwight L. Arnold was a six foot square section in the back of what is not room 218 of Kent Hall overlooking the front porch on the second floor.

  • Dr. Dwight Arnold was appointed by President George Bowman of KSU to become the Director of the Guidance and Testing Service.

 

1947

  • The Department of Special Education was established under which was included Guidance Counseling and School Psychology. The Guidance Testing Service was named to be a part of this department.

  • A forerunner of the practicum courses occurred when Dr. Arnold observed Virginia Bica, one of his students, interpret another student's test results with this student.

 

1950

  • The Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree was offered for the first time at KSU.

 

1951

  • The Kent Area Guidance Council (an organization of school counselors, school psychologists, and visiting teachers from the KSU area) was developed by Dr. Arnold.

 

1952

  • A meeting was held in Columbus at the Ohio State University to form an organization representing counselor educators in Ohio - Dr. Arnold represented KSU at this meeting. This group later became the Ohio Association of Counselor Education and Supervision (OACES).

 

1956

  • Dr. Arnold worked with John Odgers of the State Office of Supervision of Guidance Services to establish state norms for counselor cirtification.

 

1960

  • Dr. Dwight L. Arnold became the Coordinator of the division of Counselor Education under the Department of Special Education.

 

1962

  • Dr. Donald Ferguson became the Coordinator of Student Personnel and Counselor Education. This new title replaced the formal title, Counselor Education.

  • The Bureau of Educational Research came into existence under the College of Education. This was a spin-off from the original Guidance and Testing Service which was a subsidiary of the Counselor Education Program.

 

1964

  • Dr. Donald Ferguson developed the specific division of the Student Personnel and Counselor Education Program. Dr. Milton Wilson coordinated the Rehabilitation Counseling program; Dr. Dwight Arnold coordinated the School Counselor Education program; Dr. Donald Ferguson coordinated the School Psychology program; and Dr. Ronald Roskens coordinated the Student Personnel Services in Higher Education program.

 

1965

  • This was the first academic year in which the Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) was used in Student Personnel and Counselor Education.

  • The first Ph.D. graduated from the department - Edwin B. Smith (Advisor: Dr. Dizney). This was the first Student Personnel Service doctorate in the Higher Education program.

 

1966

  • The first Ph.D. graduated from the Counseling Education program: John Papas (Advisor: Dr. Litwack).

  • The first advanced studies (Ed.S.) in Counselor Education was awarded to Gary Michael Miller.

  • Dr. Ferguson left KSU.

  • Dr. Lawrence Litwack succeeded Dr. Ferguson in the coordination of the Student Personnel and Counselor Education division.

 

1967

  • Dr. Ralph E. Prusok became the first full-time director of Student Personnel Services in Higher Education at KSU.

 

1969

  • February 13 - the Board of Trustees announced the establishment of the new Department of Counseling and Personnel Services Education.

  • Rehabilitation Counselor Education became an area of the new Department of Counseling and Personnel Services Education.

  • Three sections of the School Counselor Education program were in existence. Dr. Russell Getson was coordinator and worked with procedures and theory. Dr. Glenn Saltzman worked with organization and administration. Dr. Ansel Woldt directed Elementary School Counselor Education.

 

1970

  • The Certificate of Advanced Studies was replaced by the Educational Specialist Degree.

 

1971

  • The area of Student Personnel Services in Higher Education was divided. The part relative to personnel services was moved along with Dr. Evert Wallenfeldt to the Department of Educational Administration. The part relative to counseling became the area of Counseling in Higher Education in the Department of Counseling and Personnel Services Education coordinated by Dr. Lawrence Litwack.

 

1973

  • Dr. Lawrence Litwack resigned as the chair of the department. Several weeks later, Dr. Russell Getson became the acting chair. Later, Dr. Glenn Saltzman was appointed department chair.

  • Undergraduate and graduate programs throughout the College of Education were examined by teams representing the National Conference for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Department of Education of the State of Ohio. Every program was reaccredited without qualification.

 

1974

  • The department voted unanimously to change the wording of the catalogue regarding the doctoral program to read: "Emphasis in Counseling and Personnel Services Education and Supervision, School Psychology, Rehabilitation Counseling, Small Group Studies".

 

1975 - 2000

2000

  • Dr. Marty Jencius (from the University of South Carolina) and Dr. Melanie Warnke (from the University of Western Michigan) were hired as Assistant Professor and Associate Professor respectively.

  • Dr. Bill Nemec was hired as the Director of the Counseling and Human Development Center.

 

2001

  • Dr. Jason McGlothlin (from the Ohio University) was hired as an Assistant Professor

  • The School Counseling program became a 49 semester hour master's and was accredited by CACREP.

 

2002

  • Dr. J. Steve Rainey (from Texas A&M - Commerce) was hired as an Assistant Professor.

  • Dr. West continued to coordinate the CHDS doctoral program. Dr. Jason McGlothlin became the CHDS Master's Programs Coordinator.

 

2003

  • School Counseling licensure changed in Ohio. School Counselor's no longer need teaching experience! The CHDS faculty assisted in the lobbying of this licensure change.

  • Drs. Nemec and McGlothlin worked on the development of a handbook that would delineate requirements of new school counselor education programs in Ohio. This was a project hosted by the Ohio Association of Counselor Education and Supervision (OACES) and the Ohio Department of Education (ODE).

  • Dr. Lynne Guillot Miller (from the University of New Orleans) was hired as an Assistant Professor.

  • The KSU chapter of Chi Sigma Iota International (Kappa Sigma Upsilon) was named Outstanding Chapter of the Year!

 

2004

  • Drs. McGlothlin, West, Bubenzer and Jencius worked on the first On-Line / Electronic version of a CACREP self-study.

  • Dr. Bill Nemec retired as the Director of the Counseling and Human Development Center.

  • Dr. Jason L. Miller was hired as the new Director of the CHDC.

  • Dr. Cynthia Osborn was elected the 2004-2005 Ohio Counseling Association President.

  • Dr. Jason McGlothlin was elected the 2004-2005 Ohio Association for Counselor Education and Supervision President.

  • Dr. Lynne Guillot Miller was elected the 2004-2005 Ohio Association for Counselor Education and Supervision President-Elect.

  • Dr. Steve Rainey was elected the 2004-2005 Ohio Association for Counselor Education and Supervision Secretary.
